Virus Controlled Pattern File Description

Patterns for identified viruses

A Controlled Pattern File Release (CPR) is a manually loadable, pre-release version of a Trend Micro virus protection database, designed to provide users with additional antivirus protection in between official pattern file releases.

Customers running products that support Trend Micro's new pattern file format (the multi-digit format) may obtain deployment instructions for the latest Controlled Pattern Release by clicking the link below.

Important Note: Customers using Trend Micro products that still use the old 3-digit pattern files must contact Trend Micro directly to obtain the latest Controlled Pattern Release in the 3-digit pattern file format. The CPR available through the below link cannot be downloaded or deployed by Trend Micro products that do not support the new, multi-digit pattern file format

Overview

Trend Micro products now use a multi-digit rather than 3-digit format, for displaying the numbers of pattern files. The change permits Trend Micro products to continue downloading consecutively numbered pattern files without interruption for many years.

By now, all Trend Micro customers should have updated their products to versions that support the new multi-digit file format. If you have not yet updated your products, you must do so immediately. Click on this link for information about the affected products and upgrade options.

Failure to act will prevent your products from downloading the latest pattern files after the release of old pattern file 980, or 2.180.00 under the new pattern file numbering format. No action is required only if your product is already using the new pattern file numbering format.

Important New Pattern File Format (NPF) Product Notices

* OfficeScan Corporate Edition:
Trend Micro will post NPF-compliant version OSCE 5.58 on its regular Active Update (AU) server

with the release of pattern file 980. This action is designed to help customers who have not fully migrated products to the new pattern file format by this time. In order to download and install this update, please adjust your product’s update settings to accept automatic program updates. See Solution Bank Entry 21290 for instructions on configuring your product to receive this automatic update.

* InterScan VirusWall (ISVW) NT: The NPF Service Pack for InterScan VirusWall NT 3.53 NPF is also being deployed on the AU server for NT products via a scan engine update, Scan Engine 7.1. Customers with non-NPF compliant versions of InterScan VirusWall NT can update their products automatically by adjusting their product’s update settings to accept automatic VSAPI/engine updates. The deployment of Scan Engine 7.1 will apply the ISVW NT NPF Service Pack and redirect the product to the new AU server

Important Note: Once you have downloaded Scan Engine 7.1 and the Service Pack has been successfully deployed, your product configuration page and management consoles will correctly show that your product has Scan Engine 7.1 installed.

* Special Agent for InterScan VirusWall NT: Scan Engine 7.1 also deploys a patch agent that automatically redirects NPF-compliant versions of ISVW to the new AU server

for new multi-digit format pattern files. When updating products to NPF-compliant versions, some ISVW NT customers saved and then restored configuration files from the earlier version. As a result, their products still point back to the old AU server

with its 3-digit pattern files for the latest virus protection. The deployment of this Special Agent will reconfigure these partially updated products to go to the new NPF-compliant AU server

for new multi-digit pattern files. In order to download and install this update, please adjust your product’s update settings to accept automatic VSAPI/engine updates and download Scan Engine 7.1. Customers who prefer to correct their configuration files manually should configure their products not to accept VSAPI/engine updates automatically and follow the instructions in Solution Bank entry 20833.

Note: Once you have downloaded Scan Engine 7.1 and your configuration files have been successfully updated, your product configuration page and management consoles will correctly show that your product has Scan Engine 7.1 installed.

* InterScan Messaging Security Suite (IMSS) NT and ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange (SMEX) NT: Customers who are still using non-NPF compliant versions of IMSS NT and SMEX NT and who have these products configured to download VSAPI/engine updates will also automatically download and install Scan Engine 7.1. In these products, this scan engine replaces the previous scan engine (Scan Engine 7.0), but provides no additional functionality. For these products, Scan Engine 7.1 offers the same features and same detection rates as Scan Engine 7.0. Customers who do not want to install Scan Engine 7.1 should reconfigure their products so they do not accept VSAPI/engine updates automatically. In addition, they should take immediate steps to update their products to NPF-compliant versions to ensure the continued receipt of new pattern files after the release of pattern file 980.
