BrewTroller Description

An open source, standalone brewing control system based on the Sanguino platform

BrewTroller is an open source, standalone brewing control system based on the Sanguino platform. BrewTroller monitors temperature and volume of the Hot Liquor Tank (HLT), Mash Tun and Brew Kettle and controls heat sources, pumps and valves as needed in the brewing process. BrewTroller supports PID control of heating elements making it an inexpensive solution to replace up to four PID controllers.

Here's quick overview of BrewTroller features:

* (4) PID or On/Off controlled heat outputs (HLT, Mash, Kettle and Steam Boiler)
* (16) Pump and Valve On/Off outputs (expandable to 32 using MUX Out)
* (9) Temperature sensors (HLT, Mash, Kettle, CFC H2O IN, CFC H2O Out, CFC Beer Out, AUX1, AUX2, AUX3)
* (3) Volume sensor inputs used to measure HLT, Mash and Kettle volume
* (1) Steam Pressure sensor input for controlling steam heat
* Simple encoder input providing iPod like controls (rotate left, rotate right, click for enter, click and hold for cancel)
* 20 column, 4 row backlit LCD character display

What makes BrewTroller Unique?

There are a number of savvy homebrewers who have built custom control systems for their brewery. It's been done and that's where we got the ideas from. What we wanted to accomplish is to create something that could meet the needs of many brewers looking for more automation, control and precision in their brewing, do it without breaking the bank and make it available to those without the electronics or coding skills needed to design a system from scratch. We ended up with a menu driven, standalone device that operates much like an iPod with a rotary control that is used to scroll through menus or adjust levels.

Automation

In addition to providing manual control of brewing parameters, BrewTroller can automate the brewing process. BrewTroller stores up to 20 user defined programs that include key parameters about a specific recipe:

* Target Batch Volume
* Total Grain Weight
* Length of Boil
* Mash Ratio (qts/lb or l/kg)
* HLT Tempurature
* Sparge Temperature
* Pitch Temperature
* Mash Schedule (Supports up to six Mash Steps: Dough-In, Acid, Protein, Sacch, Sacch2, Mash Out)
* Boil Addition Schedule (Boil, 105, 90, 75, 60, 45, 30, 20, 15, 10, 5, 0 Mins)

Brewing Calculations

BrewTroller uses program parameters to automatically calculate:

* Mash Liquor Volume
* Sparge Volume
* Strike Temperature

Brewing Steps

The following steps make up a program:

* Fill
* Delay Start (Optional)
* Preheat
* Grain In
* Refill (If needed)
* Mash Steps
* Sparge
* Boil
* Chill

Valve Profiles

BrewTroller uses valve profiles which are applied at specific steps in the brew. Here is the complete list of supported valve profiles:

Serial Interface

BrewTroller provides status messages and accepts commands via a serial/USB interface allowing for datalogging to a connected PC. PC companion software (BTRemote) is being developed that provides realtime display of brewing operations and even live web streaming of the data.

Other BrewTroller Features

Mash Liquor Heat Source: BrewTroller supports heating mash liquor in the HLT or directly in the Mash Tun. This configuration is part of the program settings allowing the user to use different methods for different recipes.

Smart HERMS HLT: An option that sets HLT target temperature based on the current and target temperature of the mash tun resulting in more even temperature control of the mash
