FlexBar Description

Easily configure the visibility of all menu bars

With the Firefox Add-on FlexBar you can easily configure the visibility of all menu bars, sidebars and information bars. For every element you can adjust separately whether it is shown never, always or automatically. The automatic display mechanism can be globally deactivated.

To configure the display state of a bar, open the FlexBar menu by clicking on the small arrow on the right of the FlexBar icon. Now click on the name of the element which state you want to change.

The Navigation Toolbar and the Tab Bar cannot be configured to be always hidden. An invisible Navigation Toolbar would make it impossible to handle the Add-on and with an invisible Tab Bar the usage of Firefox would be nearly impossible. Additionally, under Mac OS X the Menu Bar cannot be configured since it is always shown by the system regardless.

To display the bars which are configured as automatic, move the mouse cursor to the bottom or to the left border of the window. When no element is visible at the moment, a small grey bar is shown over which you can move the mouse.

To display the automatic elements of the navigation bar on the top border of the window, move the mouse cursor from below over the title bar of the window. The bars are hidden after some time when you move the mouse cursor out of the navigation bar to the left, to the right or to the bottom. Yet the elements stay visible, as long as a main menu or a context menu is still open or as long as the address bar or the search bar has the input focus. Using Windows, you can also quickly show or hide the automatic elements of the navigation bar by pressing the Alt key.

Optionally, you can display additional small buttons on the left side of the Tab Bar. The navigation buttons offer an identical funtionality to the buttons in the Navigation Toolbar. This way a quick page navigation is possible, even when the Navigation Toolbar is hidden. Just like the normal navigation buttons, a middle click on the reload button duplicates the active tab, a middle click on the home button opens a new tab with the home page. Additionally, there are buttons for quick access to the menu bar and the bookmarks toolbar. All these buttons can be configured to be only shown when needed. This way, even without autohide active you can save space by hiding the menu bar and the bookmarks toolbar.

To open the options menu, click on Extended Preferences in the FlexBar menu. In this menu, you can switch the autohide function on and off and you can configure the autohide timeout in seconds. Additionally you can configure if and which of the buttons on the Tab Bar should be displayed and whether they should only be shown if needed.
