glMixer Description

A real-time graphics mixing software for video performance

GLMixer performs in real time the graphical blending of several movie clips; this is what I call video mixing, which could be described as an hybrid between image processing and video editing, but with a logic close to audio mixing. Typically, you load a set of video samples, and decide on the fly how much they should be visible, arrange the images in the screen, and which effects you apply to them.

The output of your operations is shown in the main rendering window, which should typically be displayed full-screen on an external monitor or a projector.

GLMixer can handle a lot of videos simultaneously; this allows you to have all your video material 'under the shoulder' and to quickly mix them as you want.

The sound in the video sources is ignored, because mixing audio and graphics have too different criteria and requirements. The idea is that the video mix you do in GLMixer accompany a music or a live performance.

Live and performance

GLMixer is designed for video performances like VJing.

Unlike with video-editing sofwares, GLMixer applies the effects and operations in real-time. It is not meant to edit and save a movie (because saving frames and encoding the video would slow down the process and disturb the performance). However, the plan is to develop this feature anyway in a special rendering mode.

Live video sources like webcams can also be mixed (USB and firewire).

Graphic interface

The core philosohpy of GLMixer is to make the complex job of live video mixing as easy and intuitive as possible. The graphical interface is therefore designed to be simple but effective, with all the available graphical sources always visible in their current state (what you see is what you send to the output). Computer graphics features use tools that resemble the ones in common image manipulation softwares (like Photoshop or gimp).

There are three modes : Mixing view modifies transparency and blending of the several videos simultaneously, Geometry view manipulates the rectangle of the videos (move, scale, rotate, crop), and the Layers view organise videos in depth.

Considering the limitations of the mouse as a manipulation interface, and knowing that table-top and other multi-touch interfaces are comming (e.g. IPad), the interaction in GLMixer should evolve towards a direct hand-and-fingers manipulation.
