IBM iSCSI Boot Commander Description

IBM iSCSI Boot Commander is a storage area network (SAN) configuration utility aimed specifically at simplifying the use of software-based iSCSI Boot. This technology provides a unifying management console that automates and simplifies SAN configuration and operating system deployment.

Software-based iSCSI Boot enables IBM servers with no local disk to boot over the network using only typical network connections; no hardware off-load device is required. Rather than deploy an operating system on a single-spindle local disk, the operating system can now reside on a storage appliance or other suitable device. Software-based iSCSI Boot enables exciting new standardized capabilities once reserved for only extremely high end specialized hardware.

While IBM iSCSI Boot Commander is a Windows-based application, the servers that are managed can boot any software-based iSCSI Boot enabled operating system. Operating systems supporting software-based iSCSI Boot include versions of Windows® and Linux.

Typically IBM iSCSI Boot Commander is installed on a computer separate from but connected to the SAN. Any suitable system can host IBM iSCSI Boot Commander; for example, a laptop.
How does it work?

IBM iSCSI Boot Commander is an application that connects to an IBM platform and allows the administrator to select a server for configuration. IBM iSCSI Boot Commander then connects to an IBM System Storage N series or NetApp storage device and walks the administrator through the configuration of storage and optional deployment of an operating system. Specifically, IBM iSCSI Boot Commander walks the administrator through the following:

* Server discovery and selection
* Network interface port selection
* Storage device (iSCSI Target) discovery and selection
* Storage device igroup, volume, LUN, qtree, and LUN mapping
* Optional operating system deployment (via volume or LUN cloning)
* CHAP security
* Server networking parameters (for example local IP, netmask, and gateway)
* Configuration download
* Server power-up
