IBM Mote Runner SDK Description

A platform, simulation environment, and development tools for wireless sensor networks (WSNs).

Applications can be written in Java/C# using Eclipse and deployed on simulated motes (on the host PC) or physical motes (IRIS).

What is IBM Mote Runner SDK?

The IBM Mote Runner SDK bundles a set of tools to develop WSN applications. On-mote applications can be developed using an Eclipse plugin supporting C# and Java as programming languages. These applications can be downloaded, installed, executed and debugged on simulated motes running on a host pc.

On request, Mote Runner firmware for the IRIS motes is available allowing to run the mote applications on real hardware. The SDK ships with a set of tools such as a command line shell, web server and browser-based applications to manage and visualize a set of WSN motes executing the Mote Runner OS and VM.

What is the Mote Runner system?
IBM Mote Runner is a system for wireless sensor networks (WSN). A WSN is a group of specialized motes with a communications infrastructure intended to monitor and record conditions at diverse locations. Monitored parameters are for example temperature, humidity or pressure, and motes are typically equipped with a transducer, microcomputer, transceiver and power source.

IBM Mote Runner provides a high-performance, low-footprint, standards-based software middleware platform comprising a hardware-agnostic and language-independent virtual machine together with development and integration tooling to easily create and manage applications for WSNs and their motes.

How does it work?

The Mote Runner Eclipse plugin allows you to develop C# or Java appliacations for motes. The applications are compiled and converted into a portable bytecode representation and can be downloaded, debugged and tested on a mote simulation. The virtual machine on the mote allows for the installation and removal of multiple applications at run-time. A browser-based application, dashboard, and a command-line tool, mrsh, can be used to control many aspects of the simulation. Multiple motes can be instantiated, applications downloaded and removed, messages be sent and received, radio messages visualized, a set of motes saved and restored at a later time. The SDK also supports the development for off-mote applications communicating with motes and visualizing data in the browser (using the comote Javascript API).
