What is MP3?

The MP3 format compresses CD-quality songs by a factor of 9 to 14, without appreciable quality loss. A 30 megabytes (MB) song on a CD compresses down to about 3 MB on MP3 file format. This lets you download MP3 songs in minutes rather than hours, and you can store many songs on an MP3 player, CD-R, or you own computers hard disk and easily manage and share your own music collection. MP3 files have the extension ".MP3".

What is Ogg Vorbis?

Ogg Vorbis is a professional, high quality compression and streaming technology that aims to replace inferior, proprietary systems. Developed by the Xiph.org Foundation, Ogg Vorbis is completely patent-free, and it enjoys the benefits of open source. Ogg Vorbis files have the extension ".OGG". Piolet shows Ogg files with a yellow icon, trying to make them more visible to the user.

So what's wrong with MP3? Why should Vorbis be used?

Developed in the late 1980s, MP3 was originally part of a larger digital video and audio broadcasting project and was never intended to be used for everyday audio compression. MP3 was not designed with flexibility in mind, and, thus, is technologically limited. Ogg files are generally smaller and give greater sound quality, so you could say that Ogg downloads are "better" than MP3 Downloads.
