The interface of Recovery Toolbox for Project is based on the concept of a multi-step recovery wizard that requires minimal involvement of the user. All you need to do is follow simple on-screen instructions provided on every step - the program will take care of the recovery process itself. Recovery Toolbox for Project is so easy to use that anyone can use it to recover data from a damaged .mpp file - no previous recovery experience or special knowledge is required. The first step of the wizard is intended for specifying the damaged file you want to recover. This can be done in a number of ways. To select a damaged file, enter its full name and path into the input field located in the center of the program window or use the standard Windows open file dialog. You can also select one of the files you used in the past from the dropdown list, which can be opened by clicking a small button with a downward arrow in the right part of the input field. Once you've entered the name of the file to be recovered, you can proceed to the next step by clicking the Analyze button at the bottom of the program window. The program will prompt you for a confirmation and will start analyzing the contents of the file.

The next recovery step is fully automated and can take up to several minutes depending on the complexity of the file and the speed of your system. Recovery Toolbox for Project will analyze the structure of the damaged file and will display the tasks it managed to identify in a table shown at the end of the analysis phase. The table will contain the names of identified tasks, as well as their durations, start and finish dates, predecessor IDs and associated resource names. Once you've finished reviewing the table, you can press the Start recovery button at the bottom of the program window to start the actual recovery process.

The recovery process may take some time, but you will be able to track the current progress with the help of the progress bar in the lower part of the screen. Please note that the program requires that MS Project be installed on the system at the time of recovery. Recovery Toolbox for Project does not save the recovered data in a separate file, but opens it in directly in Project, so you can immediately edit it and save it under the necessary name. This is the last step of the recovery process. Once the data is recovered and passed to Project, the program will display a log of performed operations on the last screen of the wizard. After that, you can quit the program by clicking the Finish button. If you wish to recover data from another damaged file, click Back to return to the first step (file selection).

If the file you are working with is damaged beyond recovery and the program fails to identify any recoverable elements in it, you can email it to the program's authors. To do that, use the Send source file command in the main menu. The developers will analyze the content of the file and will try to recover it manually. After that, they will contact you and report on the result of their work. They will also use this opportunity to improve the recovery algorithms used by the program.
