twhirl Description

A desktop client for social software such as Twitter, Friendfeed, identi.ca, or seesmic

twhirl is a social software desktop client, based on the Adobe AIR platform.

Some of twhirl’s features:

* runs on both Windows (2000/XP/Vista/Win7) and Mac OSX
* connects to multiple Twitter, laconi.ca, Friendfeed and Seesmic Video accounts
* displays notifications for new messages
* shorten long URLs (using digg.com, bit.ly, snurl, twurl or is.gd)
* cross-post your updates to Jaiku and many other sites like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and more via Ping.fm
* post images to yfrog
* search tweets using Twitter Search and TweetScan, and follow topics in near-real time with saved searches
* automatically find tweets mentioning your @username
* record a video on Seesmic Video, and share it on Twitter immediately
* get your Seesmic Video updates in real-time using XMPP
* English spell checking

There are a lot more things twhirl can do to improve your experience, and it offers various configuration options to adapt to your personal needs.

The goal for twhirl is to offer all features in the client that can be used on the website (or, at least all those that are made available by the twitter API), plus adding nice things the website cannot do due to its restrictions of being trapped in a browser and all security implications related to that fact.

twhirl is still in its early days, so I am far away from reaching that goal. But there are already a lot of features implemented in the current beta release:

* remembering login credentials on user’s computer
* all-in-one timeline with tweets, replies and direct messages
* configurable auto-updates for the timeline
* displaying user’s latest 20 status updates and direct messages sent
* sending status updates
* sending replies to other users (with quick buttons on others’ statuses)
* sending direct messages to other users
* showing user’s friends and followers
* deleting own status updates and direct messages
* input area can be hidden (configurable auto-hiding)
* multi-account support
* keyboard shortcuts
* sys tray / dock icon support
* audible and visual notifications
* viewing and (un)setting favorites
* (un)following users
* auto-updating the program
* changeable color schemes
* searching for public tweets (powered by terraminds)
* filtering the timeline

All lists (statuses, direct messages, users) can be cleared and refreshed. To keep the user interface compact, the different lists are on seperate “layers”, of which only one is visible. You can change the visible layer using a combo box.
